AAMI Standard 108

Hospitals and surgical centers are now being held to higher water quality expectations for sterile processing equipment. Equipment manufacturers are adopting AAMI ST108: Water for the processing of medical devices. It is also expected that accreditation groups will quickly follow suit. Prior to AAMI ST108, hospitals and surgical centers only had a guideline they could choose to follow, TIR34:  Water for the reprocessing of medical devices. However, a guideline doesn't have to be adopted if a facility chooses. Standards are often more accepted by organizations and are typically adopted by accreditation groups as the new best practice.

What does AAMI ST108 cover?

  • Defines categories of water- critical v. utility water

  • Outlines testing parameters for each water category

  • Clarifies testing frequencies for each parameter for each water category

  • Provides diagrams to map out classification of various medical devices to best determine what water quality and cleaning procedure should be used for them

  • Discusses testing protocols for a new water processing system v. an existing water processing system

Testing Parameters

  • Bacteria/HPC
  • Conductivity
  • Endotoxin
  • pH
  • Total Alkalinity
  • Total Hardness
