Schools and Universities

Schools and universities often consist of multiple campuses and multiple buildings on each campus. Creating a water management plan for these campuses can be a large undertaking and determining the best way to then implement it can be even harder. Water Management Advisors works with these facilities to collect the needed information of each building and each campus, creates the plans and need risk assessments, and works closely with the maintenance team to come up with a realistic and manageable way to begin implementing the plans.

Often, schools and universities are working under a time constraint and need to have answers. We work with efficiency to get water management plans created and turned over to begin implementation within the week of conducting the on-site survey.

See below for some quick tips on schools and universities creating water management plans following the WMA Proven Process.

Schools/Universities and Using the Proven Process

Sample Approach to Successful WMPs

Evaluate

Train/Guide

Evaluate

  • Determine which buildings are included for each plan; each campus should have its own plan
  • Gather all information on each water system by building
  • Take pictures of key components of each water system
  • Do a full walk-through of each building on each campus to verify all water system information

Create

Train/Guide

Evaluate

  • Organize collected information into a flow diagram by campus using software like PowerPoint, Visio, Excel, etc.
  • Consider all water systems and note which systems are at risk for Legionella growth and how it contributes to growth
  • Create various tasks related to components of each water system that contribute to Legionella growth/ transmission, limits, and corrective actions to get control measures back within proper range

Train/Guide

Train/Guide

Train/Guide

  • Train and educate all staff on the tasks needed to be implemented
  • Assign tasks to staff to be conducted regularly (i.e., assign each building maintenance person to flush water throughout building at x frequency)
  • Document all tasks by creating log sheets or utilizing a work order system
  • Review each quarter how implementation is going and validate plan by environmental testing with a certified lab
